Member countries of the Schengen Area

The Schengen Agreement regulates preconditions of entries to and stays in the Schengen Area. This includes prove of a health insurance valid for Schengen stays and offering at least a minimum coverage of 30,000 €. An insurance policy confirming sufficient coverage for Europe must be submitted when applying for a Schengen Visa.

Schengen member countries are not identically equal to European Union member countries. Both EU and non-EU states are part of the Schengen Agreement.

When becoming part of the Schengen Agreement, member countries principally agreed on abandoning identity checks on internal borders in the Schengen Area.

Nevertheless single states can restore identity checks on their internal borders in case of major threat to public order or to inner security.
