Please apply for an extension of your Schengen health insurance before expiration of the existing policy, if your stay in Europe will last longer than planned before.
There is no general entitlement to get an extension of your policy. All extensions must be requested and approved by the insurer, who can reject your request - e.g. in case of too many claims already submitted. In case an extension of your Schengen health insurance has been accepted by the insurer you are starting a new insurance contract, meaning that claims already occured (pre-existing conditions) are excluded from the new policy.
We therefore recommend to cover the maximum period of time you might stay in Europe right from the start. Thus meaning you will avoid both extensions becoming necessary and disadvantages mentioned before. There is no financial risk for you as overpaid premiums will be refunded to you, if you left Europe earlier that planned.
